Veal Cattle Code of Practice

The Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Veal Cattle was released in November 2017. The Code committee spent the last two and a half years working on this very important resource.

Veal producers are very proud of the work that they do and this resource shows how progressive and proactive the industry can be.

In the final draft, there are updates to all welfare aspects of veal production and the most significant commitments will be with the area of housing. This is a huge commitment for the veal sector and one that had considerable time and effort dedicated to it during the Code process.

Effective December 31, 2020, in all holdings:

Group housing of calves must take place as young as possible and not later than 8 weeks of age.

Time in stalls can only be extended in exceptional circumstances for individual calves on the advice of a herd veterinarian according to the herd health plan.
